Law is present in America through its leaders and organizations.
“As President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), I had the honor of representing the European legal profession at the American Bar Association (ABA) Annual Meeting in Chicago, together with CCBE Secretary General Simone Cuomo.” – Roman Zavrsek
During the programme, we held bilateral meetings with the International Bar Association (IBA), the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA), the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA), the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), and with ABA President Michelle Behnke and President‑Elect Barbara Howard.
Our discussions focused on international justice, the protection of the legal profession, human rights, the resilience of the rule of law, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. We warned that measures targeting judges, prosecutors, lawyers or other individuals involved in the administration of international justice raised broader concerns for the rule of law.” We also reaffirmed that “lawyers must not be identified with their clients or their clients’ causes.”
Together, we also joined the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, reflecting on its enduring legacy for freedom, justice, and the rule of law worldwide.
The CCBE’s participation demonstrated our steadfast commitment to defending the independence of the legal profession and strengthening cooperation among Bars and Law Societies across jurisdictions.
