I was delighted to be able to attend The City of London Solicitors’ Company Banquet at Mansion House at the invitation of the City of London Law Society (CLLS).
While not one who usually partakes of selfies, I couldn’t resist in taking one to mark the occasion of the gathering.
My thanks to Patrick McCann for bringing together such a wide and diverse group of people, inviting many into the room who perhaps might not otherwise have been there.
Tomorrow evening, I shall attend the Justice dinner at the invitation of the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Pippa Kirkbride.
Both of these events and indeed the historic offices they represent are steeped in tradition and history. Yet the thread that connects them is not ceremony alone, but justice.
Justice is sustained by those who work each day to protect and uphold it. And in a world where rules can sometimes feel as though they have suddenly gone out of fashion, the institutions and traditions that anchor our justice system matter more than ever.
Because the safety nets of justice, the rule of law, due process and fairness, ultimately rest on one vital foundation: trust.
Trust that the law will be applied fairly.
Trust that institutions will act with integrity.
And trust that those entrusted with the law will safeguard it for generations to come.
