I. Stephanie Boyce CBE FKC: The justice system has been subject to what can only be described as managed decline and neglect.

Last night, I attended a panel debate ‘Spotlight on Jury Trials and the Crisis in the Criminal Justice System’.

The discussion centred on the role and future of jury trials in England and Wales, following the recent announcement of major reform by the Justice Secretary.

On the panel were Max Hill and Kirsty Brimelow KC who both made a robust defence against the proposed juryless trials and Sir Brian Leveson who has made recommendations to address the criminal justice crisis, and Claire Waxman OBE who favours proposals to reduce the number of jury trials.

Whatever side of the debate you land on some truths are clear:

🔴 The justice system has been subject to what can only be described as managed decline and neglect.

🟡 The risk is that, in chasing efficiency, we normalise a two‑tier system of criminal justice: full jury protection for the gravest offences, but a diluted right for those whose liberty may still be taken for up to three years.

🟢 The promise is speed. But the cost is rights. Eroded rights are rarely restored.
