Standing Firm in Power and Pride
Black History Month: How far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.
This year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” could not be more timely.
Across the world, we are seeing a worrying rollback on equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Progress built through decades of advocacy, sacrifice, and resilience is under threat.
That is why our resolve must be unshakable.
To stand firm is not an option, it is an obligation.
Sixty years ago, the Race Relations Act became the UK’s first law to tackle racial discrimination, a bold declaration that equality and fairness must be matters of law as well as principle.
Yet progress remains fragile.
Populism, division, and threats to the rule of law remind us that the work is not finished.
I continue to believe in the power of representation, policy, and equal opportunity to move us forward and in standing firm in our shared values of justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.
That is the enduring legacy of the Race Relations Act.
