I. Stephanie Boyce FKC, FRSA: “Leaving private companies to freely determine the forces that shape public discourse, opinion, and behaviour should concern us all.”

“.. social media companies determine the content we see through complex, inaccessible algorithms fed by immense amounts of personal data.” – Chi Onwurah, chair of the science, innovation and technology select committee.

An enormous amount of unchecked power has been handed over to social media companies, often with little transparency and even less consent. These algorithms not only influence what we see and think, but also have the potential to perpetuate harmful biases, discrimination, and division.

Leaving private companies to freely determine the forces that shape public discourse, opinion, and behaviour should concern us all.

The government must act to ensure accountability, transparency, and public protection. We need proper scrutiny and safeguards to ensure these systems do not cause unfair or indiscriminate harm, especially to the most vulnerable in society.
