Don’t judge me!
Today is Social Mobility Day and this year’s theme is ShiftMindsets.
But for some of us, it’s not just a day—it’s a lived experience. I didn’t come from privilege or have access to networks that would open doors for me or at least tell me which doors to walk through. I didn’t have connections in high places or a clear map into the profession I now call home. And yet, here I am, not because the path was easy, but because I refused to accept other people’s narratives about who I could be, or how far I could go.
That’s why social mobility matters to me.
Because talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not.
Shifting mindsets means creating spaces where those from all socio-economic backgrounds have equal opportunities for advancement. Where your background doesn’t hold you back or determine how far you can go. To be respected, treated equally and fairly, to be given equal access to employment, housing, health, education and justice. It means dismantling the discriminatory legacies and attitudes that still shape outcomes for too many. I know first hand the barriers that can stand in the way of ambition.
So today as we acknowledge this day, we are reminded that there needs to be a shift in mindsets, a change in the way we see talent. The creation of a level playing field, systems that lift people up rather than leave them out.
