Bar objects to government plan to abolish some jury trials
Abolishing jury trials for some relatively serious criminal offences could “deliver swifter justice for victims”, a minister told the Bar’s annual conference last weekend in the strongest sign yet that the government is moving towards a controversial reform of the criminal justice system.
In a move that would put ministers on a collision course with the legal profession establishment, Sarah Sackman KC, the courts minister, warned that drastic measures were needed to rein in the growing backlog of cases in the crown courts.
