Advice from a former Attorney General and a former Lord Chief Justice who today sits in @HLConstitution
On appeals process for @PostOffice #HorizonScandal while “MPs push for emergency law to quash postmaster convictions”
“Dominic Grieve KC, the former attorney-general, said: “Parliament can do anything it likes, but it’s not a practice which is particularly commendable. Each case ought to be considered on its best merits. If you use parliament in this way, it is, in a sense, a parliamentary interference in the judicial processes in this country. “I can see there will be some hesitation in doing that. It is a shortcut that may leave some people dissatisfied that they haven’t been fully exonerated. Just like a royal pardon is an immediate way of dealing with it, but it doesn’t actually get rid of the conviction.” Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, the former lord chief justice, cautioned in an interview with the BBC against passing a new law, saying: “There must be a real chance you were freeing people who had committed a crime.” thetimes.co.uk/article/paula-
