CCBE announces that: The CCBE and international civil society organisations stand in solidarity with Pakistani human rights lawyers Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha, who were sentenced to ten years in prison.

In a newly released joint statement, the signatories condemn the sentencing, which marks a significant escalation in the misuse of the criminal justice system against the two lawyers, and raise serious concerns about due process, fair trial standards and the disproportionate use of anti-terrorism legislation.

The consequences of such cases extend far beyond the individuals concerned: the continued targeting of lawyers for their professional work and human rights advocacy risks creating a chilling effect on the legal profession, making it more difficult for lawyers to take on politically sensitive or human rights cases without fear of reprisals.

📢 Together with the other signatories, the CCBE calls on the Pakistani authorities to respect the independence of the legal profession and ensure that lawyers can work without intimidation or improper interference.
