Roman Završek, President of the CCBE 2026

Artificial intelligence is already transforming legal research, drafting and document review. Yet the foundations of our profession remain unchanged: independence, confidentiality, professional judgment and responsibility.
In my interview for AI Horizon Journal, I highlight three principles that must guide the legal profession:
• competence before use
• confidentiality by design
• human responsibility at all times
Technology may change how we practise law, but not why our profession exists: to provide independent advice, protect rights and ensure that a human being remains responsible for every legal judgment.
My sincere thanks to AIEI and AI Horizon Journal for the opportunity to share the perspective of the European legal profession.

The more convincing AI becomes, the more disciplined lawyers must be in verifying it.
AI is no longer a future question for the legal profession. It is already part of legal research, document review, translation and drafting.
But efficiency must never come at the expense of professional secrecy, independence or accountability. Lawyers must understand the tools they use, verify their outputs and remain fully responsible for the advice they provide.
In my interview, I also address an important challenge for the next generation: if AI takes over routine legal tasks, we must replace not only those tasks, but also the learning experience they provided.
Thank you to AIEI and AI Horizon Journal for publishing this timely conversation on AI, digital transformation and the future of the legal profession.
