Leadership has a way of testing how we see ourselves.
Along the journey, it is easy to carry the weight of disappointment, criticism, setbacks, or the labels others place upon us. Often, the greatest challenge is not the obstacle itself, but the story we begin to tell ourselves because of it.
It took me four attempts to become the 177th President of the Law Society of England and Wales.
Four attempts.
What if I had allowed rejection to convince me I wasn’t good enough? What if I had stopped believing in what was possible?
Instead, I kept going.
When I was elected, I became the first person of colour to serve as President in the Law Society’s 200-year history. That moment was never simply about making history. It was about making it easier for someone else to believe they could.
Representation carries responsibility.
Not to prove we belong, but to hold the door open for those who come next.
The most effective leaders I have met are not those who have never failed. They are those who refuse to let failure, rejection or the opinions of others define their worth.
Leadership begins with identity. When you know who you are, what you stand for, and the values that anchor you, you lead with greater clarity, courage and conviction.
Never allow the labels others place on you to become the limits you place on yourself.
You were designed with purpose. Lead with purpose.
