From humble beginnings to CBE

I am honoured to share that I have been appointed a Commander (CBE) of the Order of the British Empire in His Majesty The King’s New Year Honours, for services to the legal profession, to diversity, and to access to justice. The delay in my announcing this is because I needed time to sit with these words, with this recognition and to allow it to settle in.

When I was a child, I used to dream of becoming a solicitor, that I would change the world, right all the wrongs, and ensure justice was done, to speak up and speak for those whose voices had been silenced. And whilst I may still be working towards that endeavour, it is not lost on me the sacrifices made by the many so I could achieve what I have.

And in a world where I haven’t always been seen, it is not lost on me that I am where I am today, thanks to the many who sat, walked, and ran to ensure the world would be a different place where I could fulfil my potential and aim for the stars.

So I receive this honour with humility and gratitude. It is not mine alone. It reflects the collective endeavour, resolve, and courage of those who have gone before me, stood alongside me, who have challenged me to lead boldly, supported me generously, and shared an unwavering commitment to making our profession, and the society it serves, fairer, more inclusive, more accessible, and more equitable.

So remember this: What you do matters; find your purpose and share it with the world.
