CBA chair Riel Karmy-Jones KC, said
“Riel Karmy-Jones KC, Chair of the Criminal Bar Association, said “This decision is no surprise to anyone working in the criminal justice system. It was a disaster waiting to happen, and one that the government should have foreseen. The artificial cap on sitting days, imposed over a year ago, made it inevitable.
We are seeing cases listed for trial in December 2029. There are hundreds of thousands of complainants and accused who whose lives have been put on hold by the government’s short sighted funding decisions – for them this is a living nightmare, and many are leaving the process. All this is mirrored by an increase in the number of prisoners held on remand awaiting trial – and we are running out of spaces.”
