It was a pleasure to join president Richard Atkinson and DVP Brett Dixon and colleagues from The Law Society at 10 Downing Street for a reception hosted by the Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood to celebrate the strategic role the legal sector plays in the British economy
The mood music with regards to lawyers has certainly changed of late and it’s great to see the legal sector included in the recently published UK government “Industrial Strategy”
The stats speak for themselves:
Legal services generated an astonishing £47.1bn in 2023
🌍 The sector pulled off a £9.5bn export value and a trade surplus of £7.6bn in 2023. For a country known for trade deficits, our sector is quietly turning the tables
📈 50% growth in a decade – way ahead of UK economy’s overall 10% growth
👥 the sector is a huge employer – around 400,000 jobs across the UK
🏆 English law is the world’s gold standard, with around 40% of global cross-border business and financial transactions estimated to be governed by English law; the UK is the world’s second largest legal market after the US
No wonder the government recognised the legal sector as a national asset and an engine of economic growth 🌟
Great to see a strong female ministerial team in action including Sarah Sackman Lucy Rigby KC MP joining the Lord Chancellor
Fabulous to catch up with so many friends Christina Blacklaws (she/her) Richard Susskind Shruti Ajitsaria Kirsty Brimelow KC Barbara Mills KC Akima Paul Lambert Georgia Dawson Clive Thomas Sarah Sargent Samuel Townend KC and many, many more
