PRESS RELEASE: Informing the European Commission about the current situation of the judicial system in Romania

Being fully aware of the current critical situation towards which the judicial system in Romania is heading, as the constitutional guarantor of the independence of the judiciary, the third power in the state,

In accordance with the repeated public availability expressed by the Council to contribute, through open and constructive dialogue, to identifying the most appropriate solutions for ensuring the stability of the magistrates’ status, avoiding a systemic crisis, and guaranteeing the functional continuity of the administration of justice,

Determined to guarantee and protect the fundamental rights of citizens regarding access to justice within an optimal and reasonable timeframe, a component of the right to a fair trial,

Following the evaluation mission on March 10, 2025, organized in the context of drafting the Report on the Rule of Law, as well as the subsequent discussions regarding the legislative proposal to amend the normative acts in the field of occupational pensions for judges, the Council has transmitted to the European Commission.
