Building on my mission to leave the legal profession more diverse and inclusive than the one I entered.
I have always been a strong advocate for solicitor apprenticeships, recognising their potential to make
the legal profession more accessible and inclusive.
I have championed solicitor apprenticeships as a key tool for increasing diversity
and inclusion in the legal profession, ensuring that talent—not privilege—determines success.
So during this week we celebrate apprentices and apprenticeships; we continue our
work to make the profession more accessible. I returned to my old school, The Grange School in
Aylesbury Town Council with colleagues from DLA Piper, Sophia Pearse and Faiza J. to raise
awareness and highlight the benefits of solicitor apprenticeships. I am hoping that colleagues
at The Bar Council of England and Wales will be able to also offer barrister apprenticeships soon, thus
opening the barrister profession up to a new cohort of lawyers. I am grateful to HHJ Francis Sheridan
for offering shadowing opportunities to not one, but two students from the school, as we continue to
work to open up our profession and make it more welcoming and accessible.
I had the opportunity to meet one of the students who will be shadowing HHJ Sheridan and my eyes
brimmed with pride as he thanked me for putting him in touch with HHJ Sheridan and making the
shadowing opportunity possible. I couldn’t do what I do without the support and generosity of so many of you.
Together we are changing lives and making a positive difference.
For all who recognise the potential and value of a more diverse and inclusive profession and the
value of apprenticeships. Thank you.
