Yesterday was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the USA. A national public holiday,
set aside to recognise and honour the contributions and legacy of Dr. King to ending
racial segregation, promoting justice, and a commitment to his vision of a more just
and inclusive society.
Yesterday also saw the inauguration of the 47th president of the USA, the beginning of the
“Trump revolution,” some have hailed it. In one day, with a flurry of executive orders aimed
at the justice system, diversity initiatives, freedom of speech, and much more, we saw the
administration take a swipe at some of those ideals that many have held dear, protections fall
away, lives upended and uncertainty cast over the future.
The irony of yesterday and what the future holds for not only the USA but how contagious
this combative agenda may become is of concern.
A cloud has set on a promise to end the “vicious violence of the justice department.”.
As we navigate this pivotal moment, we must maintain our commitment to a world where
all people enjoy the benefits of equality, justice, and the protection of the rule of law.
We also must remain vigilant as to the future safety of AI, the seeds of discourse it may sow in
the hands of unorthodox users, and the power and influence of its masters if left unchecked.
