The underfunding of the criminal justice system from the #police to the #courts, to #criminalsolicitors, to #criminalbarristers… @TheCriminalBar

The underfunding of the criminal justice system from the police to the courts, to criminal solicitors,

to criminal barristers who prosecute and defend serious cases, to probation and to the prisons has created

a situation where the criminal justice system which was rightly the envy of the world is now described as broken and dysfunctional.

Prisoner release at 40% of sentence served; Reduction in Crown Court rooms staying open “From the 10th September 2024 many prisoners are being released, having served 40% of their sentences. Many victims will consider these early releases as “soft punishment” for the crimes committed upon them. There is no choice.”

Chair Mary Prior KC: “Despite the public need for prison to be available for those who require both punishment and rehabilitation so that they do not reoffend on release, the prisons are full. There is no choice. Places need to be freed up for violent and sexual offenders, for the rioters, and for people held in custody awaiting their trial. Yet the vitally important aspects of a prison sentence which protect the public from future harm cannot be undertaken when prisoners are kept in their cells for 20-23 hours a day due to overcrowding and lack of sufficient staff.   Early release comes at the same time as the reduction in the number of courts open each day to hear trials and sentences. The underfunding of the criminal justice system from the police to the courts, to criminal solicitors, to criminal barristers who prosecute and defend serious cases, to probation and to the prisons has created a situation where the criminal justice system which was rightly the envy of the world is now described as broken and dysfunctional.” Watch this separate
