We’re full. Almost!

After years of cuts by successive governments, abandonment of the justice system, and cries of a need for investment financially and politically, we awaken to news that there are less than 100 places left in male prisons!

The possibility for the first time of the implementation of an emergency measure, “Operation Brinker” a one-in, one-out system. This comes on top of “Operation Early Dawn”, an emergency measure that delays court hearings until enough prison spaces are available. With magistrates having been told to stop jailing convicted criminals until September 10, when new emergency measures will see the early release of prisoners who have served 40 percent of their prison sentence rather than 50 percent.

Myself and countless others have spent years calling for the government of the day to properly fund and invest in justice, our fourth emergency service, just like it does the NHS. It is a lack of funding and interest in the justice system, not just over the last 14 years but for years, which has led to justice not being served for victims, witnesses, and defendants.

Might I dare suggest, and the public should insist, that the “difficult but necessary action” that is needed to ensure we can keep locking up dangerous criminals and protect the public is by properly funding the system, the whole infrastructure, including those who work within it and rely on it to keep us safe.
