Above and beyond…
The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will shortly be underway, but for many, the preparations started a long time ago, with the investment of their time, commitment, and winning mindset.
The mission of the International Olympic Committee – IOC is “to unite the world in peaceful competition and foster an atmosphere of peace, development, resilience, tolerance and understanding.”
The Olympics present us with an opportunity to display all of these values in everything we do and are striving to become. In four years, save for exceptional circumstances, our athletes will repeat it all again at the 2028 Olympics, but imagine having to wait four years to have your day in court, to give testimony, to recall events, and to have your life put on hold because of the continued delays in our court system. Imagine being caught up in a system that is so backlogged that some victims are giving up and withdrawing their support for prosecutions, resulting in some cases collapsing. Imagine being a victim, witness, or defendant and having your case listed four years or more after the alleged crime.
The point I am making is to highlight the stark contrast between the efficiency and dedication we celebrate in sports and the inefficiencies of our justice system. Just as we invest in the Olympic Games, we must invest in our justice system to ensure timely and fair access to justice for all.
