Partners at Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling have overwhelmingly approved the merger of the two firms, paving the way for a completed tie-up in 2024. An joint announcement said 99% of the votes cast at each firm were in favour of the deal. A&O Shearman is set to become the third-largest law firm in the world once the deal goes live, with combined revenues of approximately $3.4 billion.
Together, A&O Shearman will have around 3,950 lawyers, a figure which includes 800 partners across 48 offices. The new entity will have 30% of its partners in the U.S., 30% in the U.K. and 40% “across the rest of the globe,” the firms said in May when they announced the merger plans.Friday’s statement said: “The firms will now embark on a period of active integration planning, while they work together toward final closing of the transaction, which is anticipated in or before May 2024.”
